CARGO BIKE OR BIKE TRAILER - THESE ARE THE DIFFERENCES

Whether bicycle trailer or cargo bike – both transport options are very trendy! You can use them to bring your child or your shopping from A to B in an environmentally friendly way, avoiding time-consuming traffic jams and, as the icing on the cake, saving yourself the hassle of searching for a parking space. But what are the differences? Bicycle trailers score points above all with their flexibility: They can be quickly and easily attached to and removed from the bicycle, folded up and stored in the car or apartment to save space. Detached from the bike, they can be used separately, for example as a buggy when walking or jogging, or simply taken with you to the supermarket. A cargo bike is a bicycle model that is specially designed for transport and is particularly resilient: depending on the model, between 100 and 200 kg can be transported. While on bicycle trailers the loading area is behind the bike, on cargo bikes it is at the front. A key difference between a bicycle trailer and a cargo bike is the price. While the prices for cargo bikes are in the high four-digit range, good, high-quality bicycle trailers are available for well under 1,000 euros. Bicycle trailers are not tied to a specific bike, but can be mounted on different bikes, so that theoretically every family member is able to ride them. You just need to have the appropriate hitch. Not to be neglected: Given their size and weight, cargo bikes also require their own parking space!

The two variants can be used as a trailer, buggy or – for the very sporty – as a jogger. The integrated handbrake as well as a 3-stage adjustable suspension, safety lighting and the new patented 5-point magnetic belt system offer safety and comfort in one. THE ADVANTAGES OF BIKE TRAILERS

Whether for transporting dogs or as a ride for children who cannot yet ride a bike themselves or are not yet able to cover long distances - bicycle trailers are a clever solution for everyday life. But bicycle trailers are also practical helpers as a smart option for transporting loads when shopping. A clear advantage over other transport alternatives such as the classic child seat is the safety factor. While with a child seat attached to the luggage rack, the weight of the child riding with you has a major impact on balance and the journey can quickly become a wobbly affair, this is not the case with bicycle trailers. At the same time, the little passengers are protected from wind and rain and the risk of injury in the event of an accident is significantly lower than with a child seat due to the lower fall height. Boredom? Exhaustion? None! Children or pets can sit relaxed in the trailer, enjoy the ride, play or even sleep. However, it should be noted that the bike's handling behavior has changed due to the increased length and width of the vehicle, which could lead to difficulties in curves, when changing lanes or in narrow passages. Driving, braking and maneuvering should therefore definitely be practiced beforehand without passengers.

REQUIREMENTS FOR DRIVING WITH BICYCLE TRAILERS

Children should always wear a helmet and wear a seatbelt while traveling in the trailer. For dogs, an integrated leash in the trailer ensures greater safety. The driver carrying the transport should be at least 16 years old. It goes without saying that driving carefully and showing consideration for one another in road traffic is a given. Can you go on long tours with a bicycle trailer? In any case! The use of a bicycle trailer is ideal, especially for longer tours with the smallest family members who cannot yet cycle or are not yet fit enough for longer bicycle trips. Depending on the model, up to two passengers can sit relaxed in the trailer, play or sleep in it.

ARE BIKE TRAILERS SAFE?

Compared to the classic child seat, a bicycle trailer is significantly safer. On the one hand, the children are protected from external influences by the trailer itself, and on the other hand, in the event of a fall, the fall height is significantly lower than with a child seat. Driving behavior and driving behavior play a major influence on safety -ability of the driver. Driving, maneuvering and braking with the trailer should be practiced extensively. Cautious behavior in road traffic is also a prerequisite. The transport bike should also be well cared for and maintained, and the lighting and braking systems should be functional and in good condition.

WHAT SHOULD YOU CONSIDER WHEN BUYING?

In any case, we recommend taking a test ride before purchasing and getting extensive advice from a specialist retailer in advance, as driving with a bicycle trailer is significantly different to driving “without a trailer”. On the one hand, these are a different width and length: narrow street passages or cycle paths are a little more difficult to navigate with a trailer. The changed driving characteristics when driving up and down hills are also different than “without” and should be practiced extensively beforehand without passengers. Before purchasing, you should also check the permissible total weight according to the manufacturer's specifications in the operating instructions, as exceeding this weight could result in the bike frame breaking. The bicycle frame and the brake system of the transport bike must be designed in such a way that they can withstand the increased demands. It should also be noted that not every trailer hitch can be mounted on every bike. By law, up to two children up to the age of seven may be transported in a bicycle trailer with appropriate seats and restraint systems.

THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS APPLY TO THE LIGHTING:

The front lighting of a trailer with a width of more than 60 centimeters requires a white reflector on the left and right with a maximum distance of 20 centimeters to the outer edge, the rear lighting requires a red tail light on the left side. If the width is more than one meter, an additional light with white light is required in the front on the left side. In general, for rear lighting, two red reflectors are required on the left and right with a maximum distance of 20 centimeters to the outer edge. On the side, the law requires retro-reflective white stripes on tires, rims or wheels or on the spokes of each wheel. Alternatively, two yellow spoke reflectors can be attached to each wheel, offset by 180 degrees.
